How much energy does NV14 store?
The NV14 holds 14.4 kWh (kilowatt-hours) and can charge/discharge at a rate of 7.68kW.
Will NV14 work with my existing solar panel system?
Most systems can be seamlessly retrofitted, though some older solar configurations may require additional equipment to bring the solar panel system up to current fire and building codes.
How often can I use it?
The NV14 is designed for daily cycling of energy. Typically, customers will charge the battery from solar during the day and discharge from the battery in the afternoon/evening when solar isn’t producing and the utility is charging peak pricing for electricity.
Can I charge it from the grid?
The NV14 is programmed to be able to charge from the grid/solar or charge from solar only. Utility regulations may limit your battery’s grids activity to prevent “rate arbitrage” (buying power from the utility when it is cheapest to sell back when rates are higher). This may change as more energy storage is installed and the utility companies figure out a better method to track sourcing of stored energy
Where is it made?
The NV14 is designed and assembled by our engineering team in San Diego, CA, USA. While some components are sourced from overseas, the product assembly and quality testing occur in America.
What is the NV14’s battery chemistry?
The NV14 uses Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFe(PO4) or LFP).
Why Lithium Iron Phosphate?
Lithium Iron Phosphate is considered a much safer battery chemistry with a longer lifespan than what is used in conventional home energy storage systems that use other forms of Lithium-ion chemistry (typically Li-NMC or Li-NCA). These other chemistries are often used because they are cheaper or because the competitive energy storage manufacturers also use them in other products (such as Electric Vehicles). Lithium-ion NMC and NCA batteries have the possibility of “thermal runaway”, which can create an inextinguishable fire if a cell is punctured or if moisture interacts with the chemistry.
What’s the total cost of NV14?
Total cost to install a NV14 depends on your solar configuration. We’ll connect you with a certified NeoVolta partner-installer to get an exact quote for your installation. If you’re installing it with a new solar installation, you can utilize the built-in inverter to convert power from your solar panel system, which will offset some of your solar cost versus the cost of a solar-only system. The cost of retrofitting the NV14 to a currently installed solar panel system also depends on your solar configuration. Some systems may require additional equipment to meet new building/fire code.
Why do I need a battery?
It minimizes reliance on high-cost utility electricity by storing solar energy during the day to use at night, when rates are most expensive. Home energy storage protects your solar investment by maximizing use of your own solar-produced power. It can also provide the freedom and security of reliable power in a grid outage.
How does home energy storage work?
Energy produced by your solar panel system during the day charges the battery, which stores it for you to use later. For daily battery cycling, nighttime is typically when electricity rates are most expensive. For emergency backup purposes, the system will provide your home with secure power independence from the grid, and in some cases keep your solar panel system operational and producing electricity.
How much will I save?
Savings can vary greatly depending on when you use energy, how much energy you use, utility pricing, and the leveled cost of energy (LCOE) from your solar panel system. LCOE is a calculation based on the cost of your solar panel system and how much electricity it will produce during the warrantied life of the system.
Example: if your utility’s peak pricing is $0.60/kWh and your LCOE is $0.10/kWh, then every kilowatt-hour stored from your solar and used during peak times will save you $0.50/kWh. If you’re cycling (charging/discharging) 88% of battery capacity daily, you’ll save more than $6/day compared to utility peak pricing.
How much energy storage do I need?
Battery capacity will depend on your energy use habits and goals for installing energy storage. Typical home energy storage systems range from 5kW-15kW of storage, with room to expand further. High energy consumers and those looking for extended grid independence may require additional storage capacity.
Is energy storage safe for my house?
As a permitted addition to your home, energy storage systems must be certified and get approval from federal and state authorities as well as the utility company. While they are considered safe, some systems are safer than others, depending on what battery chemistry they use. Li-ion batteries containing cobalt have the possibility of “thermal runaway,” which can cause severe fire. Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries, like what’s inside the NV14, are cobalt-free, and will not experience “thermal runaway.”
Will the NV14 work with my existing solar panel system?
Most systems can be seamlessly retrofitted, though some older solar configurations may require additional equipment to bring the solar panel system up to current fire and building codes.
Can I install a battery only (without solar)?
No. The battery must be connected to a solar, wind, or generator system.
How is the NV14 connected?
Your solar panel system connects to the NV14 through your existing inverter or can use the NV14’s built-in inverter to convert your solar energy to AC power. The NV14 connects to your main service panel.
Where can I install it?
The NV14 is designed for indoor or outdoor installation. Common locations are inside the garage or outside by the main service panel.
What additional equipment do I need?
A critical load panel is always required for secure power during grid outages. Some older PV systems may require a DC disconnect retrofit to meet current code requirements. Required equipment may vary based on your solar panel system and local jurisdiction.
What is a critical load panel?
A critical load panel is a subpanel connected directly to the NV14 that will continue to operate in the event of a grid outage. Rather than backing up the entire house, which can drain your battery too quickly, the “secure power circuits” are intended to protect vital functionality and basic comforts for your home. Typically, 4-8 circuits are backed up through your critical load panel, allowing you to maintain power for things like lighting, refrigeration, communications, security, medical equipment, etc.
When can I get it installed?
The NV14 is installing now! Depending on your partner-installer’s availability, if you order today, you could have your battery installed within the next 4 – 8 weeks.
Who will install it for me?
NeoVolta has a network of certified partner-installers who are trained to install and set-up the NV14. We’ll connect you with a partner-installer in your area.
How long does installation take?
The installation itself takes less than a day. The total project time will be a bit longer, as this type of project requires plans, permits, and inspection. Your partner-installer will be able to give you a timeline for your specific project, but the NV14 is currently available and installing now. There is no delay for manufacturing, as with some other conventional home energy storage systems.
Can I select a contractor myself? Can my previous solar installer do it for me?
Yes, as long as that contractor is a certified partner-installer. If you’re interested in having your original solar installer handle the installation of your NV14, have them contact NeoVolta to register and get trained.
Can I install it myself?
No. Only NeoVolta trained and certified installers are allowed to install our home energy storage battery.
Is it eligible for the federal tax credit?
The IRS has provided guidance that the 30% tax credit can be applied on a stand alone energy storage installation or as a component of your solar panel system (when charged 100% from your solar panel system). Talk to your tax advisor to confirm the details of your tax credit eligibility.
How much is the tax credit?
Qualified tax payers receive 30% of the total installed cost (equipment + installation) in the form of a tax credit. Talk to your tax advisor to confirm the details of your eligibility.
What is the SGIP rebate?
Under SB700, the state of California has allocated $830 million to incentivize self energy storage.
The program provides rebates to customers for installing home energy storage systems, which allow solar power to be used all hours of the day. This addresses the solar energy “duck curve”: overproduction of solar energy during the day and underproduction at night when electricity rates are most expensive.
By supporting and incentivizing the development of energy storage technologies, SB700 will reduce the costs for energy storage, just as other previous rebate programs did for solar power.
NV14 is rebate eligible.
Is it eligible for the SGIP rebate?
Yes, the NV14 is eligible for the California rebate.
The State of California has allocated $830 million to incentivize self energy storage. The program reduces the costs for energy storage in the form of a rebate just as other previous rebate programs did for solar power.
Rebate availability and $/Wh credit amounts are specific to your local utility provider. Current rebate pricing for you utility can be found under “Small Residential Storage” on https://www.selfgenca.com/home/program_metrics/.
Please note SDG&E is included under CSE.
The NV14 qualifies for 13,896 Watt hour credits under the incentive program and can be estimated by the following equation.
(SGIP Rebate) = 13,896 x (Utility Specific $/Wh)
Rebates are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.

Does it provide backup power in a grid outage?
Yes. In a grid outage, the NV14 automatically detects a decrease in power from the utility and switches to “grid-independent” mode, allowing your home to stay powered and your solar panel system to keep producing energy. You’ll be able to use your protected backup circuits as you normally would. During the day when the sun is shining, your solar panel system will continue to function and charge the battery for multi-day outage scenarios. Once the grid restores electricity, the NV14 automatically detects a stable power supply and switches back to “grid-interactive” mode, providing you with seamless backup power throughout the outage.
Will the battery automatically turn on in the event of a blackout?
The NV14 provides seamless backup capabilities to power your secure circuits located in your critical load subpanel. Your solar panel system will be able to continue to generate power (unlike solar-only systems), and a backup generator can be incorporated to provide another source of grid-independent electricity. Once the grid comes back online, the NV14 automatically detects stable power and switches back to grid-interactive mode.
Does my solar still work when the utility has an outage?
Grid-tied solar energy systems without batteries are dependent on the grid. When a grid outage occurs, your solar panel system deenergizes and stops producing power… even when the sun is shining. SOLAR + STORAGE allows you to automatically disconnect from the grid and power your home using stored energy and solar from your system until the grid comes back online.
How long will my battery keep me powered during a blackout?
When paired with solar panels, an energy storage system can power your home infinitely provided depth of discharge maximum is not exceeded daily. Though you may be somewhat limited on how much energy you can consume or which household amenities you can enjoy, as long as the sun is shining, you can power your life.
What can I back up when the grid goes down?
This depends on how long you want your back-up battery power to last. Typical home energy storage systems allow you to back up important functions like lighting, refrigeration, communications, and security. You can back-up high energy users like air-conditioning, oven, and pool pumps, but this will deplete the battery much faster.
If my internet provider is down during a blackout will my system work?
Yes
Will remote monitoring work if the grid is out?
Yes, provided your internet provider is not affected by the blackout
Do I have to connect my system to the internet?
No. However, we strongly recommend connecting your system to the internet, which will allow 24/7 remote monitoring of your system. This will also allow you to receive critical firmware updates that may affect your warranty or eligibility for the California SGIP rebate.
Can I connect my battery to WiFi?
Yes
If my internet provider is down during a blackout will my system work?
Yes
Will remote monitoring work if the grid is out?
Yes, provided your internet provider is not affected by the blackout
Is financing available?
There are a variety of $0 down financing options available for residential renewable energy projects, including solar + storage or storage only. We’ll connect you with a certified NeoVolta dealer/installer who can discuss financing details with you.
What’s the warranty?
NV14 has a 10-year limited warranty (4,000 cycles at 80% depth-of-discharge or 50,720 kWh lifetime throughput). Click here to see full warranty.
Are there any maintenance costs associated with the battery?
The NV14 does not require additional maintenance once it has been installed and initialized by your certified partner-installer. NeoVolta may remotely update firmware or programming to ensure optimal performance of your battery based on your utility’s rate structures. We recommend that your installer conduct a service call at the 4-year mark to ensure optimal performance.
What is Time-of-Use?
Time-of-use is a rate plan in which rates vary according to the time of day, season, and day type (weekday or weekend/holiday). Higher rates are charged during the peak demand hours and lower rates during off-peak (low) demand hours. Rates are also typically higher in summer months than in winter months. This rate structure provides price signals to encourage energy users to shift energy use from peak hours to off-peak hours.
Will my rate structure change?
Currently, adding home energy storage to your solar panel system should not change your rate structure. Utilities and the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) are still figuring out how to accommodate residential battery systems, so while regulations may change in the future, there is currently little/no difference in your rate structure or compensation through Net Metering.
Do I lose Net Metering?
Currently, Net Metering is still available to all residential customers who go solar in California. The utilities and CPUC are planning to revise Net Metering for future solar energy systems connected to the grid, however, that does not affect 20-year grandfathering for systems currently installed. As of now, home energy storage systems do not alter your Net Metering agreement.

Will my WiFi work in a blackout with my battery powering the home?
It depends on what kind of equipment you have for your internet connection and the circumstances of the utility grid outage that caused the blackout. In common grid outage scenarios, as long as your internet service provider’s equipment is powered, you’ll be able to connect. Communications circuits within the home, including computers, routers, and modems, are considered a critical load and are protected with seamless, secure power from the energy storage system.
